Review: FeedTso by Daniela Panfili

Published: Feb 12 2011

There are many news / RSS feeds readers in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, but here's one with some bonuses that make it worth its price.

Technically speaking, FeedTso is a client for 'Google Reader', the Web-based feeds aggregator launched by Google on 2005. It provides most of the features you would find on the web at the touch of your fingers... and it does it with a lot of style.

The main UI is organized in a panorama control (the same you find on the phone's Games Hub and Office app), where the first screen greets you with the latest and most interesting news from your subscriptions. Other than that, you can browse by labels, explore Favorites, and even see news sources that your friends shared in the 'My Friends Space' screen.

Each item can be read directly from the app, or you can bookmark it for later reading: you can choose a service to do so (Starred Item in Google Reader, InstaPaper, Read It Later are supported in the version we tested) in the settings screen. The same screen also lets you choose if links should open in-app or in an external IE window.

You can also share items in various ways, including E-Mail, Google Reader itself, or Twitter - more social networks (Facebook.. what else?) will come with future app updates. Twitter integration requires you to login through oAuth, so you must not even be worried about sharing your passord, and that's a nice plus.

You can grab the trial version of FeedTso free of charge and see if it suits your needs, we honestly encourage you to do so. FeedTso trial is fully functional except that your Google Reader credentials won't be saved across sessions.

ProsCons
  • Clean, responsive UI, nice to the eyes
  • Unique "social" features are a nice touch
  • No push notifications nor Live Tile support
  • First time users may benefit from an in-app tutorial
